چکیده

In his paper ‘Logic and conversation’ Grice (1989: 37) introduced a distinction between generalized and particularized conversational implicatures. His notion of a generalized conversational implicature (GCI) has been developed in two competing directions, by neo-Griceans such as Horn (1989) and Levinson (1983, 1987b, 1995, 2000) on the one hand, and relevance theorists such as Sperber & Wilson (1986) and Carston (1988, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998a,b) on the other. Levinson defends the claim that GCIs are inferred on the basis of a set of default heuristics that are triggered by the presence of certain sorts of lexical items. These default inferences will be drawn unless something unusual in the context blocks them. Carston reconceives GCIs as contents that a speaker directly communicates, rather than as contents that are merely conversationally implicated. GCIs are treated as pragmatic developments of semantically underspecified logical forms. They are not the products of default inferences, since what is communicated depends heavily on the specific context, and not merely on the presence or absence of certain lexical items. We introduce two processing models, the Default Model and the Underspecified Model, that are inspired by these rival theoretical views. This paper describes an eye monitoring experiment that is intended to test the predictions of these two models. Our primary concern is to make a case for the claim that it is fruitful to apply an eye tracking methodology to an area of pragmatic research that has not previously been explored from a processing perspective.

Between “cost” and “default”: a new approach to Scalar Implicature

Scalar Implicatures are pragmatic inferences that are normally derived in conversational exchanges when a scalar term, such as for example “or”, is used. Different theoretical accounts have been proposed to describe how and at which point in the derivation we actually add this inference. Large part of the most recent debate is focused on the question of the “cost” of implicature computation, an...

The Intuitive Basis of Implicature: Relevance Theoretic Implicitness versus Gricean Implying

The notion of implicature was first introduced by Grice (1967, 1989), who defined it essentially as what is communicated less what is said. This definition contributed in part to the proliferation of a large number of different species of implicature by neo-Griceans. Relevance theorists have responded to this by proposing a shift back to the distinction between explicit and implicit meaning (co...

Probabilistic integration of linguistic framing in ad-hoc pragmatic implicatures

Language comprehenders make a wide variety of pragmatic inferences to determine the meaning of ambiguous utterances in context. These inferences are affected by both the informativeness of the alternative messages with respect to an interpretation and the relevance of potential interpretations within the context (Grice, 1975). We use simple referential games to explore the interaction of these ...

An Analysis of Humor in The Big Bang Theory from Pragmatic Perspectives

The cooperative principle proposes four maxims in communication. When any of the four maxims is violated or flouted, misunderstanding or implicature, and thus humor might be generated. Humor can also be studied pragmatically within the framework of the relevance theory, which proposes that communication is a process of ostension and inference and differentiates the maximal relevance and optimal...

Ad-hoc scalar implicature in adults and children

Linguistic communication relies on pragmatic implicatures such as the inference that if “some students passed the test,” not all did. Yet young children perform poorly on tests of implicature, especially scalar implicatures using “some” and “all,” until quite late in development. We investigate the origins of scalar implicature using tasks in which the scale arises from real-world context rathe...
